My Self Ship Shrine
I've been a self shipper for a long time- long before I knew there was even a word for it! Fiction is something I've always found comfort in, and continue to do to this day! While self shipping is a fun thing for me, I'd be lying if I said I didn't take the relationships I've had with my F/Os seriously- I'm not really sure if I'm comfortable using the label 'Ficto' for me, because there's not really any difference between the attraction I feel for my F/Os and other people to me. I tend to only have one F/O at a time, and currently that would be Yes Man from Fallout: New Vegas! The information below does feature a lot of my headcanons about Yes Man as well, for clarification.
(SPOILERS for Fallout New Vegas's independent route below!)
Yes Man
He/They/It
Yes Man is an AI that mainly resides in a securitron body, and later on in the Lucky 38's mainframe. He was Benny's right hand man in his plans to take over New Vegas- Yes Man mostly assisted in spying on Mr. House's network for activity, and was able to do things such as intercept and decrypt data about various things, including how much Mr. House had spent on searching for the platinum chip, and the routes and items being carried by couriers Mr. House had hired.
After Benny's demise however, he ends up assisting Courier 6 in taking Benny's plans for an independent New Vegas, due to being programmed to be helpful to anyone and everyone he talks to, and to follow any orders given as well. However, this doesn't render him completely unable to voice his own opinions or thoughts- using a particularly passive aggressive tone to get around his forced positivity, he's able to hint to Courier 6 how he feels about particular choices they make. He's not stuck like this forever though- after the second battle for hoover dam, he finds coding in House's database to upgrade himself to be more assertive- meaning that he can continue to assist the courier without the threat of someone using him against them because of his inability to say no, and better voice how he actually feels about plans or decisions courier 6 might make.
He takes a lot of pride and interest in general statistics and knowing his way around them- which makes Mr. House's database quite a fixation for him. He's also skilled with file decryption as mentioned, eager to show off his skills even when the legality of doing so can be sketchy. He also prefers polite company, as seen by his fondness for the White Glove Society- even though his own politeness and positive attitude were forced pre assertive upgrade, it's a trait he values in other people as well.
Courier Six (Finn)
He/They
Finn was a courier for the Mojave Express, who previously had roots in the fringes of NCR territory on their family's ranch. After spending time with the Followers of the Apocalypse they moved on further into the mojave, taking occasional courier jobs to scrape by while he hunted and lived off the land to make up for the meager pay. Unfortunately one fateful package would lead to them being shot in the head by Benny and buried in a shallow grave. After surviving the head wound thanks to Doc Mitchell's work, they stayed in Goodsprings for a short period, before becoming restless and haunted by the man who shot them. After walking the vast Mojave Finn found himself on the New Vegas strip, and after convincing Swank that Benny had to be dealt with, murdered Benny in a botched attempt to ambush and question him. Searching his suite for answers, Finn found Yes Man in Benny's workshop- the closest thing he'd get to getting answers directly from Benny.
Unsure about their ability to be a leader for an independent Vegas, they only intended to finish their obligation of delivering the platinum chip to Mr. House, only to find themselves swept up in a plot to kill him with the couriers turned friends they had met on their trek to New Vegas. With him out of they way they would plan the difficult road ahead for a newly independent Vegas, making allies to turn the tide of the second battle for Hoover Dam that loomed on the horizon.
While Finn may not be a people person, they're still very compassionate- just usually from a distance, if they can help it. Prone to being full of rage, he hasn't handled it well in the past but is getting better about it, trying very hard to not misdirect it. With friends they're loud, full of jokes, and loyal to a fault. Enjoys learning about nature, especially the fauna of the harsh Mojave desert. A skilled hunter as well, they're a good shot with a rifle and excellent at laying low and waiting for an opportunity to strike- however they become significantly less stealthy if asked to sneak while moving. The runty gecko they keep around, Zilla, was an egg they were holding onto as food supply, only to hatch and now she's Finn's problem now (affectionate).
Our Relationship
Our relationship didn't become romantic until well after the second battle for hoover dam and Yes Man's assertiveness upgrades- prior to that we were only unlikely friends. We didn't start on the best foot- All I knew about Yes Man when I met him was that he was the one who helped Benny with the plan that lead to me being dumped in a shallow grave, and Yes Man thought I was nothing more than some brute who had happened to cut Benny's plans short. It wasn't until we had to spend more time together while working on plans for an independent Vegas that we started to realize how well we got along, and that perhaps our first impressions of each other were a little hasty.
It did take awhile to become romantically involved even after his assertiveness upgrade however- getting used to no longer being a pushover took some time and practice, and with the chaos that came with a newly independent Vegas, it left little time for either of us to confront these feelings. Once things settled down relatively, however, we both finally had the time to address what we both assumed were unrequited feelings for each other. Our trips to Hypatia, looking for guidance and text related to whatever challenges came with running Vegas gave us plenty of time to get to know each other much more than we were able to before.
When not absorbed in work, we enjoy discussing the respective fields of science we're both interested in, and taking Yes Man through the Mojave to explore outside of the cramped workshop he'd spent his entire prior life in. While I wasn't quite used to Yes Man's more romantic approach to relationships, I can't help finding it very charming, to his delight.
